loving less and getting orchids to bloom and re bloom

Remember how with little people you could pour all your love into them and they would soak it all up?

I find loving teenagers is sometimes like loving orchids. You can’t over love them; they won’t let you.

Less is more, sometimes

Every orchid I have ever been given I have over loved watered and eventually killed.

The trick with orchids is not to water them every time you walk past them. If I was thirsty I figured they were. It just seemed like the considerate thing to do.

But they need less than a 1/4 cup a week. Or just place an ice-cube at their feet once a week.

So while this is the way we watch movies on my bed

and I am very affectionate with them, they need their space too.

Sometimes I wish it wasn’t the case

but I want the orchids to bloom

and re bloom

so I try to back off

(my semi neglected orchid above was given to me when I made my speech on passion last winter. I am determined to keep both alive)

have you ever noticed how order can produce a certain harmony? I have been doing a little throwing and a little organizing and it feels easier to breathe at home. Click here for a glimpse at my tidy  naughty underwear drawer

  1. How true. I love the saying from my favourite show Parenthood; ” sometimes the more they push you away the more they need you”. Rings true in my head almost daily as I navigate mothering a teen.

At least I can count on my orchids to bloom….will remember the watering when I think of mothering “love”.
