“Oh, Nance”

celebrating your birthday earlier this week

Sometimes when you think of all of the things that make a person really dear to you, you get lost in all their good qualities and all the things they bring to your life.

But amidst all their goodness there is sometimes a moment that bubbles up and is so indicative of who they are and how they feel about you that from that point onward you see that when you see them.

Today is your birthday.

You are beautiful and wholehearted and full of emotion on the surface. I have seen you cry hard and laugh hard within moments of one another. You have a peanut allergy and rarely tell anyone and you don’t carry an epipen- but those wacky stories are for another day. You have no poker face, wearing every emotion bigger than life in everything you do. We tease you frequently and you laugh at yourself in the most extraordinary way. You are so beautiful.

When my renovation was complete, I invited you and all our friends from school to a pre-Christmas dinner. My house looked beautiful and it was mine.  The tree was up, fire was on, candles everywhere and dinner was in the oven. My children were there as good as they are and I was whole and happy. My house was not broken. This was more than bricks and mortar.

You walked in to my new space and burst into tears.

“Oh, Nance.”

You cried a big cry and hugged me hard.

I knew what you meant.

To have someone this happy for you and show it is a great gift.

I have never forgotten this. When I look at you or think of you, I think of this.

Happy Birthday, beautiful, deep and lovely girl. You crack us all up and you love us so well.
