aren’t you kind of old to have a boyfriend?

The richest aspect to my art business, is the conversations and connections that take place.

One on one large projects allow me the opportunity to really get to know the client.

When the client is 8, it is inevitable that they will tell me all sorts of stuff and ask some really amazing hard questions.

I love hard questions.

I like to have my girls come down and meet the people I am working with and see what we are doing.

It is my way to be grateful for them, the work I do, the space we share and show my whole self to those with whom I work.

8 year old Olivia was working on this glorious 30X40″ for her family room, when the mathematical equation of my life started to confuse her.

The air changes in a room just before a tough question is asked.

It is still and tingles on your skin.

Did you ever get married?

Yes, a long time ago when I was in my late twenties.

What happened?

I tried to remember not to insult her intelligence but also not shatter her ideals.

We tried and tried to make it work and we could not. You know, like you and that great friend, Olivia, who just could not stay friends.

Oh yes, I had that with a friend who used to mumble when she spoke and I could not understand her.

She looked at me a little sad.

I made a genuine smile.

I am very happy.

Do you have a new husband?

(Disney makes it hard for 8 year olds to think of unmarried as anything other than unhappy)

No. I have a really nice boyfriend.

Aren’t you kind of old to have a boyfriend?

We laughed so hard we had to stop painting.

(I didn’t know how to articulate that I don’t feel much older than her)
