the weight of love

There is a bridge in Paris where people profess their undying love to one another by taking a lock and attaching it to the bridge.

This bridge is actually crumbling under its weight.

Official officials who laugh in the face of sentimentality have been seen cutting out large portions of the lock covered edges in order to save the bridge. Lovers everywhere are traumatized.

What if all those couples who later divorced could just return to Paris, find their locks and cut them  and throw them themselves?

Would that save the bridge?

After all, it would be lighter by a half.

(I am hoping this is math and not cynicism.)
