do not put the fire out

When two of my favourite people in the world asked where I wanted to celebrate my birthday last night I told them honestly “the fire station”. If you have never been there you can’t possibly understand. I know the people that work there fairly well because I used to set off the fire alarm often when I cooked.

Why are these girls favourites? Because they stop at nothing to have fun. In their extremely busy lives they always do the extra bit and never sacrifice fun. They do the unexpected with excitement like little kids giggling in anticipation of a surprise.  They don’t take themselves too seriously and have an absolute love of life. Oh yeah, and they love me and I can’t help but love them for that.

The staff at the firestation were busy- I don’t know- something about a fire, so we went out for Mexican.  Guacamole, attentive beautiful manager wearing jeans well, stories, tortillas, tears, 24 year old adorable waiter,  margaritas, secrets, naughty gifts, gooey dessert with sparkler stuck in  and huge non stop laughter filled our corner of the room. A few times I looked around and thought to myself once again- I am having the most fun of anyone here. It doesn’t seem fair.

I read a funny book recently that was called “How to not act old” and found that I do pretty much all the things that I should not if I want to be young. The list included dancing badly, singing the wrong lyrics to your kids music,  admitting  confusion with   modern technology.  But the real bell ringer was  laughing really loud in an unstable way that makes people think you never get out. I get out a lot I  think but I do have a  laugh at times that is a bit psycho -I know because my brothers imitate it and they have nailed it the way brothers can. Strangely, I am attached to laughing hard and seem to choose friends who do the same.  Last night we laughed loudly  for hours until they politely kicked us out (chairs on tables, someone whistling while they swept, cute manager pacing, 24 year old waiter sucking his thumb and dozing off).

I went to bed feeling like the luckiest girl alive. And really, really young- in spite of what the book said.
